About this event
Flags of New Almaden Historic District, 21785 Almaden Rd, San Jose 95120
Thursday, June 27, 2024 (10:00 am - 2:00 pm)
MAP
Forty-two American flags fly in New Almaden from April 22 to July 9 to commemorate Pat and Kevin Tillman. Stroll the community to sketch the flags or follow the New Almaden walking tour. There's a lot of history (well documented with informative signage) compressed into a small area in NewAlmaden. Did you know Almaden Valley and Quicksilver County Park were named after the mines of Almaden Spain and were once the largest in the Western Hemisphere and played an important role in the Gold Rush and subsequent California history.
The New Almaden Historic District is located along Almaden Road between Casa Grande and Almaden Quicksilver CP. It contains many historic houses and buildings linked to the quicksilver (mercury) mining history dating back to the 1840s. Many of the people who managed or worked for the mines lived in New Almaden and their houses still remain including the Carson-Perham house and St. Anthony's Church.
We will meet in the Almaden Quicksilver CP parking lot.
Restrooms are located in the parking lot.
Directions: From highway 85 take Almaden Expressway South for 4.5 miles to Almaden Road. Turn right and drive 3 miles along Almaden Road through the town of New Almaden and the County Park parking lot is on the right.
Attendance: Attendance is free and is open to all non SCVWS members and non-members
